The major rivers and their master tributaries have carved the plateau into alternating broad-river valleys and intervening higher level interfluves, such as the Ahmednagar, Buldana, and Yavatmal plateau. The Sahyadri Range is the physical backbone of Maharashtra.
The Parvara, the Purna, the Manjra, the Penganga, the Wardha, the Wainganga, the Indravati and the Kolab are the major tributaries of the river. Godavari Basin extends over an area of 312,812 km in five states, which is nearly 9.5% of the total geographical area of the country.
