Unplug any headphones or external speakers from your Mac. Make sure the cables from the display are connected to the ports on your Mac. On your Mac, choose Apple menu > System Settings, then click Sound in the sidebar. (You may need to scroll down.) Click Output, then make sure [Mac model] Speakers is selected in the output device list.
15 mar 2014 · The easiest way to fix this when it happens to me (usually when I unplug my headphones) is: Go to System Preferences -> Sound; Adjust the slider bar at the bottom where it says "Output volume". Even a small adjustment to the aforementioned slider bar re-enables the keyboard volume controls for me.

Select Keyboard in the sidebar. Click Keyboard Shortcuts and select Function keys in the sidebar. Make sure ‘Use F1, F2, etc as function keys’ is set to the off position.
