Luis Jiménez. Born in Texas, lives in New Mexico. Sculptor, teacher whose large fiberglass figures capture the color and vigor of Hispanic-American women and men. Luis Jiménez studied architecture and art at the University of Texas at Austin, receiving his B.F.A. degree in 1964.
Artistry. As a sculptor, Jiménez was known for his large polychromed fiberglass sculptures, often of Southwestern and Hispanic themes. His works were often controversial. They are eminently recognizable due to their themes, his original sculptural style, and the colorful, undulating surfaces the artist employed.
Proud of his Chicano roots, Luis Jiménez (1940-2006) was an El Paso, Texas native, best known for his large-scale, brightly colored sculptures immersed in the Chicano iconography of Texas and New Mexico. Jiménez studied art and architecture at The University of Texas in Austin and El Paso.

Luis’ first important work was a four-foot sculpture of a peace sign, the beginning of what would become his Peace series. Inspired by Robert Indiana’s famous “LOVE” sculptures, the Peace series has become his most popular work, with dozens of sculptures produced in various sizes and media.
