In this well-characterised cohort of COPD participants, haemoglobin derangements (anaemia or polycythaemia) were found to be prevalent (19%) and associated with increased morbidity including symptoms, quality of life, functional exercise performance, and hospitalisations for COPD exacerbations.
Anemia in COPD is associated with greater healthcare resource utilization, impaired quality of life, decreased survival, and a greater likelihood of hospitalization. We need large prospective studies to discern the association between anemia and COPD.
