28 lip 2023 · The Hebrew word for love is ahavah, which is rooted in the more molecular word hav,1 which means to give, revealing that, according to Judaism, giving is at the root of love. What does this etymological insight teach us both about the function of love and about how love functions?
In our modern Western culture, love is an abstract thought of emotion, how one feels toward another, but the Hebrew word אהב ahav [H:157] goes much deeper than simple emotion. The parent root of this word is הב hav. While this root is not found in the Biblical text, a couple of other derivatives are.

It has been applied to romantic love, parental love, sibling love etc. Then we get to words which apply to a specific type of love. There is dovid which is one that is beloved. You have racham which is a merciful love, a love that is returned.
