Their marriage lasted until the comedian’s death in 1997, and she continues to embrace her identity as his widow. In 2023, Lothian visited Pigeon Forge to unveil a piece from the Red Skelton Museum in Indiana. She shared her mission:

Red Skelton died in a hospital in Palm Springs, California of pneumonia on September 17, 1997. At the time of his death, he lived in Anza, California, and was married to Lothian Skelton, his wife of 25 years. He is buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Glendale, California.

Skelton married for a third and last time in 1983 to the much younger Lothian Toland. Near the end of his life, Skelton said his daily routine included writing a short story a day. He collected the best stories in self-published chapbooks.
