I've been looking at the LG SL5Y 2.1 soundbar, which has DTS: Virtual X and dolby digital. But to my understanding this technology really only has an effect with 5.1 soundbars or soundbars with upwards firing speakers.
For the DTS:X, you need more than a 2.1 speakers layout but for Virtual:X you don’t need more speakers. The existing speakers of the TV or soundbar are enough to deliver the virtual: X. Also for DTS:X, you need amplifiers or av receivers to manage the speakers.
The overhead effects can be delivered by DTS virtual X in a soundbar and TV speakers but for Atmos height virtualization you need a powerful receiver. The Virtual X can provide noticeable height effects with just a soundbar with no up-firing speakers.
I'm looking to get a soundbar for my new TV I'm getting in the near future. The TV is the Hisense U6G which supports Dolby Atmos. As for DTS:X while I couldn't find anything about it on the official page, rtings.com says that it supports DTS:X passthrough through HDMI ARC and Optical.
