In the final analysis, it is sin against God ; but the Gr. verb ψεύδω, meaning lie, appears only in the middle voice in the NT, denoting perhaps that the liar deceives himself, thinking to gain an advantage. In the OT lying is condemned in the Ten Commandments (Exod 20:16; Lev 19:11, 12).
