William “John” Curry from Thirsk was the hangman for Yorkshire between 1802 and 1835 and carried out at least 58 and as many as 117 hangings during his 33 year reign. He was known as "Mutton Curry" as he had twice been convicted of sheep stealing, having had his death sentence commuted on each occasion.
