Southern Florida, Florida Keys, and peninsular Florida are home to hundreds of species of small and large butterflies. Some of these butterflies are known for relying on very good mimicry techniques. They mimic larger species or other animals altogether.
It’s easy to spot these huge butterflies in Florida! Eastern Giant Swallowtails prefer forests with deciduous trees, suburban gardens, and meadows with many flowers. Their large size and striking yellow and black coloring make them welcome visitors in backyards. Males are very active and constantly fly around host plants in search of a female.

19 wrz 2023 · Giant Swallowtail Butterfly. The adult has a wingspan of 3-1/2″ to 5-1/2″. The upper surface of the wings is brown with a row of large yellow spots along the margins and a prominent diagonal yellow band. The undersurface of the wings appears bright yellow.

The Tropical Buckeye (Junonia evarete) is a large brown butterfly with dominant eyespots and trailing orange and creme-colored wing edges. It can be found in tropical environments including fields, lowlands, and sandy islands.
The Palamedes Swallowtail (Papilio palamedes) is the largest butterfly regularly encountered in Florida with a wingspan reaching 5-7 inches. It is a primarily black butterfly with rows of pale yellow spots on the upper wing surfaces.
