VAN NUYS AREA HISTORY. Originally “Valley Division”, the origin of Van Nuys Area could be traced back to the opening of a police station in the Van Nuys Civic Center building on January 1st, 1924. This building, located at 14410 Sylvan Street, remains standing today.
Since the LAPD was founded, 200 officers have been killed while on duty. They will be honored at a memorial at the new LAPD headquarters downtown today. A memorial ceremony for all officers who have died on duty in California will take place Friday in Sacramento.
