INTRODUCTION. José Protasio Rizal Mercado y Alonso Realonda, best known as the “Father of the Philippines, was a polymath who came to embody the struggle against Euro- ” pean colonialism in Asia, and the visible head of the Philippine nationalist move-ment at the end of the nineteenth century.
Purpose. Being one of the most active patriots in demanding Philippine political reform while living in Spain, Rizal grew in popularity and was viewed “as the intellect, the inspiration, and the energy behind the cause” of Filipinos fighting for independence against the Spanish authorities (DeStephano, 2015, p. 118).
Rizal’s two novels are the most translated works in the Hispanofilipino canon. Since Spanish has never been spoken as a majority language in the Philippines, the only way for Filipino readers to understand the Noli and Fili was to read them in translation.
