The Split E mechanism is designed to make the high E more responsive. This mechanism physically splits the double G keys. When playing G, the keys behave as normal, closing both of the G keys. When fingering high E, the mechanism closes the lower of the two G keys.

13 cze 2006 · A split E mechanism is intended to produce a more solid E3. It does so by closing one of the keys associated with the G key (LH3), which reduces venting and will make it easier to hit E without cracking and to slur from A to E.
As for the difference, a split E mechanism is an extra set of mechanics that changes the way high E natural is vented, improving response and intonation. A facilitator is a small disc of metal or plastic inserted into one of the tone holes that accomplishes a similar effect without adding the bulk of the split E and at a much lower cost.
