4 lis 2024 · Kongu Nadu is neither a specific administrative or political unit within Tamil Nadu but a notional area lying in the western part of the state. The name ‘Kongu’ is derived from the Kongu Vellala Gounders, who are an OBC community that is concentrated in these districts.
Most of the Kongu Vellalar kootams have Sangam period names, named after a famous Sangam cheiftain, king or a dynasty. Chera country, wrongly thought at first to be Kerala is ascertained to be Kongu with their capital at Karur Vanji.
