Ananda Mahidol [b] (20 September 1925 – 9 June 1946) was the eighth king of Siam (later Thailand) from the Chakri dynasty, titled Rama VIII. At the time he was recognised as king by the National Assembly in March 1935, he was a nine-year-old boy living in Switzerland.
The Democracy Monument was built in the reign of King Rama VIII to commemorate the transition from an absolute monarchy to a constitutional monarchy. The Monument was designed by the Fine Arts Department, emphasising architectural styles that reflect the significance of the governmental transition.
