The Lan Xang Kingdom, also known as the “Land of a Million Elephants,” was a powerful and enduring kingdom in Southeast Asia, existing from 1354 to 1707 AD. Founded by King Fa Ngum, who was of Khmer and Lao descent, the kingdom was established with the help of a Khmer military force from the Angkor Empire.
With the support of Jayavarman IX, Fa Ngum returned to Muang Sua with a 10,000 armed men to gain control and consolidate his kingdom. Princess Kèo Kèngkanya later died from plague, while he was campaigning North against the Mongols. In 1353, Fa Ngum founded the kingdom of Lan Xang Hôm Khao—"land of one million elephants and a white parasol."
In the 14 th century, the King Fa Ngum founded the first Lao Kingdom, Lane Xang, here in Luang Prabang. Luang Prabang remained the capital of Lane Xang until 1565 when the capital was moved to Vientiane.
Fa Ngum was the founder and first king of the Lao kingdom of Lan Xang who created the first unified state of the Lao people. Fa Ngum was the grandson of Souvanna Khamphong, the last in a long line of local rulers of the principality of Muang Swa, later called Luang Prabang, on the upper Mekong.
King Phayu of Lanna raised an army which Fa Ngum overwhelmed at Chiang Saen, forcing Lanna to cede some its territory and provide valuable gifts in exchange for mutual recognition. Having secured his immediate borders Fa Ngum returned to Muang Sua .

In 1353, Fa Ngum became the king of Laos. He names his kingdom Lan Xang Hom Khao, which means “The Land of a Million Elephants and the White Parasol”.
