Speed is a scalar (how fast something is moving regardless of its direction). Ex: v = 20 mph. Speed is the magnitude of velocity. Velocity is a combination of speed and direction. Ex: v = 20 mph at 15° south of west. The symbol for speed is v.
In Chapters 2 – 5, we will investigate how things move as well as why things move. In Chapter 3, we will examine forces in one dimension, which explain why objects move in one dimension as they do. In Chapters 4 and 5, we then extend these ideas to two-dimensional situations.
Chapter 1: Introduction to Classical Mechanics (PDF) Chapter 2: Units, Dimensional Analysis, Problem Solving, and Estimation (PDF - 4.5 MB) Chapter 3: Vectors (PDF - 4.4 MB)
con ned to a particular system of reference. A building, for example, is at rest in Earth's reference, but it is a moving body for other moving systems like train, motor, airplane, moon, sun etc. Motion of an airplane Figure 1.1: The position of plane with respect to the earth keeps changing with time.
We will be discussing motions under speci c fundamental laws of great physical importance, such as Coulomb’s law for the electrostatic force between charged particles.
