When the eyes are in contact with these allergens, the eyes get red, inflamed, watery, itchy or swollen. Although these symptoms can look like the signs of an infection, allergic conjunctivitis is not an infection and is not contagious.
Conjunctivitis (say: kon-junk-tih-VY-tis) is the most common eye problem kids can have. It can cause redness; itching; inflammation (say: in-fla-MAY-shun) or swelling; and a clear or white, yellow, or greenish gooey liquid to collect in the eyes.
A red eye is most commonly due to conjunctivitis, which can be safely managed in primary care with observation if the discharge is watery (allergic and viral conjunctivitis are common and frequently self-limiting), or topical antibiotics if discharge is purulent.

Conjunctivitis is also known as “pink eye” because the eye looks pink or red. In children, the condition is often grouped into either newborn conjunctivitis or childhood conjunctivitis.
The child may complain of pain and blurred vision and the parent may notice a red, watering eye with a subtle “cloudiness” in the eye. This may come on suddenly and progress quickly, so medical attention should be urgently sought.
