A good way to know if your Mun escape was efficient is to look at the next predicted Kerbin apoapsis (purple Ap label). If it's near the Mun where it is when you leave, it means there's no radial component in your escape trajectory: all the fuel you burn was burnt to get you out, and nothing else.
Returning to Kerbin is done by essentially burning towards the retrograde vector of the Mun and this is normally done by getting into orbit then burning prograde at the right time. But if you launch straight up from the surface you can save a lot of fuel. Here I made a handy illustration.
While if you would ascent entirely vertical, straight into an escape trajectory, you have to achieve over 800 m/s in a short time span. At a TWR of 10 you can accelerate at 16.3 m/s 2, which would take roughly 50 seconds, during which you are also fighting the Mun's gravity.
16 lip 2013 · When you want a really elegant mun mission, learn docking and do an apollo-style mission with a detachable lander. That way you can keep the fuel for the return trip in mun orbit, so you don't need to land it and bring it back up....or just add more stages below your existing rocket.
So, you only have to get a moderate escape from Mun orbit and almost surely you'll end orbiting Kerbin. For best results do the maneuver while opposite Kerbin. Then simply burn retrograde until you hit the ground.
22 sty 2023 · When you are ready, just start burning prograde until you get an orbit around Kerbin and an escape trajectory from the Mun. An easier way to do this is to just burn upwards from launch sending you straghit up to an escape trajectory (about 2,000km).
9 lip 2024 · Perform a Trans-Kerbin Injection (TKI) to escape the Mun's gravity. Upon reentry into Kerbin's SOI, burn retrograde at apoapsis. Use atmospheric braking to slow down and prepare for reentry. Around 30-40 kilometers above the surface is a good altitude for aerobraking on Kerbin.
