Act 1, Scene 1 Summary. The scene opens on a Venetian street with Roderigo, Desdemona’s suitor, having an argument with Iago. The audience learns that Roderigo has paid Iago to help him (Roderigo) marry Desdemona, who has eloped with Othello, the Christian Moor.
Analysis. The Duke of Venice meets with his senators about a Turkish invasion of Cyprus. They manage to see through a Turkish ploy to make it look as if the Turks will attack Rhodes instead of Cyprus. Then the Duke and the Senators discuss how to repel the Turkish attack on Cyprus.

Act 1, Scene 3 Summary. The duke and some of the senators enter, discussing the Turkish fleet they have spotted and its destination. It appears the Turks are heading to Cyprus. Othello, Brabantio, Iago, Roderigo, and others enter. The duke orders Othello to leave at once to fight the Ottomans.
