The modern Karelian Republic was founded as an autonomous republic within the Russian SFSR, by the Resolution of the Presidium of the All-Russian Central Executive Committee (VTsIK) on 27 June 1923 and by the Decree of the VTsIK and the Council of People's Commissars of 25 July 1923, from the Karelian Labour Commune.
Karelia has one of the biggest burial sites of Stalinist purges in Russia – Sandarmoh, where possibly thousands of victims were executed. Main article: Solovki prison camp During Soviet Union's first five-year plan (1928 to 1932) tens of thousands of gulag prisoners were used to dig the White Sea–Baltic Canal .

Between 1721–1812, South Karelia and the Karelian Isthmus were part of Russia. This resulted in different dialects being spoken in North and South Karelia, Savonian dialects in the north, and South Karelian dialects in the south.
