23 mar 2016 · This chapter discusses the variations and developments of motif designs in Malaysian batik sarongs and how these motifs reflect shifts in Malaysian national and cultural life. The study focuses on the characteristics of various motifs used in traditional batik sarong design.
Traditionally, batik was sold in 2 1/4 meter lengths used for kain panjang or sarong in traditional dress. Now, not only is batik used as a material to clothe the human body, its uses also include furnishing fabrics, heavy canvas wall hangings, tablecloths and household accessories.
The Indian lungi, Burmese htamein, Indonesian and Malay kain pelikat, for example, are all sarongs in their own right. Early records showed sarongs’ compatibility with the hot, tropical climate of Malaya.
