Jumanos were a tribe or several tribes who inhabited a large area of western Texas, New Mexico, and northern Mexico, especially near the Junta de los Rios region. They were known for their trade, salt mining, and resistance to Spanish colonization, but they disappeared as a distinct people by 1750.
This area includes the Texas panhandle and goes over to near Dallas, south to Waco and maybe even to near Austin. These Jumanos are called the Plains Jumanos to distinguish them from the Pueblo Jumanos who lived along the Rio Grande.
The area extends south towards Cuchillo Parado in Northern Chihuahua, Mexico and stretches northeast to Redford, Texas and northwest to Ruidosa, Texas with Presidio, Texas and Ojinaga, Mexico at its center.
