Famous as the king who granted the Magna Carta in 1215, John was the youngest and favourite son of Henry II. He succeeded his brother Richard I (the Lionheart) as king in 1199 and his reputation has always suffered in comparison.
He became Henry's favourite child following the failed revolt of 1173–1174 by his brothers Henry the Young King, Richard, and Geoffrey against the King. John was appointed Lord of Ireland in 1177 and given lands in England and on the continent.

King John. DPG521-536 (and possibly After De Critz DPG384), one of sixteen or seventeen portraits surviving from a set of twenty-six assembled by Edward Alleyn in four batches from 1618 to 1620. These may well have been acquired, like Alleyn's similar set of Sibyls (British School DPG537-45), from 'Mr Gibkyn'.
