Grant MacLaren is an FBI Special Agent monitoring the movements of criminal Jonas Walker. However, his partner Walt Forbes hands him screenshots of cryptic messages on the deep web, which look like gibberish to the untrained eye.
MacLaren's case capturing Jonah Walker and the team's first mission assassinating Jonah was engineered to overlap. But that only makes sense if MacLaren would have been there in the first place to fall down the elevator shaft which seems extremely unlikely.
