Broadus' Catechism includes 15 lessons and a section of suggested biblical passages for memorization. Each lesson consists of two types of questions: the first set is for all students and the second is for advanced students.

He was educated at the University of Virginia, and from 1851 till 1853 was assistant professor of ancient languages there.
Like the great London pastor, he supported the use of catechisms in the reli-gious instruction of children. When the Baptist Sunday School Board (now LifeWay Christian Resources) was organized in 1891, the first publication projected was A Catechism of Bible Teaching by John A. Broadus.
John A. Broadus (1827-1895) was the first professor of New Testament interpretation and homiletics at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and the second president of the school. A profound preacher, Broadus previously served as pastor of the Baptist church in Charlottesville, VA.
