John Bardeen was born in Madison, Wisconsin, on May 23, 1908, son of Dr. Charles R. Bardeen, and Althea Harmer. Dr. Bardeen was Professor of Anatomy, and Dean of the Medical School of the University of Wisconsin at Madison.
John Bardeen was an American physicist who was co-winner of the Nobel Prize for Physics in both 1956 and 1972. He shared the 1956 prize with William B. Shockley and Walter H. Brattain for their joint invention of the transistor.

Biography. John Bardeen was born in Madison, Wisconsin on 23 May 1908 to Charles Russell and Althea Harmer Bardeen. His father was dean of the University of Wisconsin medical school. Bardeen was an extraordinary student who advanced from third grade directly to junior high school.
