Jesus was about to share a meal with His disciples, and scholars disagree whether this meal was actually on the Passover, or if it was the Passover meal, but celebrated the day before. i. The chronology is an issue because in some passages, it seems that Jesus was crucified on the day of Passover.
And then John added this commentary, “For he knew who was to betray him; that is why he said, “Not all of you are clean.” And we talked last week about the fact that clean had to do with forgiven, cleansed of their sin. So right here, Jesus is saying concerning Judas that he was not forgiven. His sins were not forgiven.

Chapter Thirteen is the beginning of five chapters in which Jesus intimately addresses His disciples before the crucifixion. With the hour upon Him, knowing the disciples will be scattered like sheep whose shepherd has been struck, Jesus lays aside Himself to love them to the end.
