2 mar 2022 · Each section of this text begins with the phrase “Amen, amen.” (Translated as “very truly” in verses 1 and 7 in the NRSV.) The phrase informs us that what comes next is important and authoritative. We often use “listen” similarly. Verses 1-7 are in the form of a figure of speech (NRSV).

The eternal life granted by Jesus to His "sheep"—to true believers (John 3:16–18)—cannot and will not ever be stolen, revoked, or lost. This same Greek phrase also echoes Jesus' conversation with Nicodemus (John 3:16).
It means that Jesus has them safely in his own care and keeping. Compare Romans 8:38-39. Jamieson-Fausset-Brown Bible Commentary. 28. I give unto them eternal life—not "will give them"; for it is a present gift. (See on [1822]Joh 3:36; [1823]Joh 5:24). It is a very grand utterance, couched in the language of majestic authority.
