A return to the biblical text in the prologue (the Gospel According to John 1:1–18) provides a clue to why Jesus’ name is so important. The Gospel According to John 1:12 records: “But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God.”
John begins his gospel by stating, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” (John 1:1). This statement affirms the eternal nature and divinity of Jesus, who is identified as the Word made flesh (John 1:14).
John’s style includes (1) purposeful twofold or double meanings; (2) misunderstanding, where Jesus is speaking on the heavenly level, but he is misunderstood as speaking to a material or earthly situation; irony in derogatory statements by Jesus’ enemies; and explanatory notes.
