A return to the biblical text in the prologue (the Gospel According to John 1:1–18) provides a clue to why Jesus’ name is so important. The Gospel According to John 1:12 records: “But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God.”
John begins his gospel by stating, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” (John 1:1). This statement affirms the eternal nature and divinity of Jesus, who is identified as the Word made flesh (John 1:14).
The Prologue begins on a cosmic note with a reference to Creation. The author has chosen words and symbols with which people of varying backgrounds would resonate.
