Clench was with BTO until its first breakup in 1979, appearing on the albums Street Action (1978) and Rock n' Roll Nights (1979). In addition to playing bass, Clench shared lead vocal duties with Fred Turner and wrote multiple songs for these two albums.

10 maj 2009 · Turner and Thornton became co-lead guitarist in Bachman-Turner Overdrive, and the bassist and singer Jim Clench (once of April Wine) was added. After Tim and Randy Bachman left the group the remaining members bought the rights to the name BTO (the acronym which had been in popular use for some time) and officially adopted the name in 1978.
11 kwi 2022 · With Jim Clench of April Wine fame coming in on bass, Turner switched to rhythm guitar. 1978 had STREET ACTION hit the stores and the single “Down The Road” on the airwaves, but poor direction from the record label meant no one listened or bought it. They released ROCK AND ROLL NIGHTS on Mercury Records the next year.
The remaining members replaced him with Jim Clench of April Wine and continued on under the name BTO. After releasing two albums that found even less success, they disbanded in 1979.

Fred Turner has shifted to rhythm guitar (while handling the majority of the lead vocals...his strongest suit) to accomodate the arrival of ex-April Wine bassist/singer Jim Clench. "Street Action" is full of heavier rock while still retaining a few of the mellow passages.
