Clench was with BTO until its first breakup in 1979, appearing on the albums Street Action (1978) and Rock n' Roll Nights (1979). In addition to playing bass, Clench shared lead vocal duties with Fred Turner and wrote multiple songs for these two albums.
The melodic intro track, sung by bassist Jim Clench, sets the tone for the majority of the LP, which only shows an edge, and a hint of past glory, when burly C.F. Turner takes over on vocals on two cuts - "Heartaches" and the Southern rockin' "Here She Comes Again".
Fred Turner has shifted to rhythm guitar (while handling the majority of the lead vocals...his strongest suit) to accomodate the arrival of ex-April Wine bassist/singer Jim Clench. "Street Action" is full of heavier rock while still retaining a few of the mellow passages.

Rock n’ Roll Nights is also one of the two albums from this band to feature Jim Clench, formerly of April Wine.
10 maj 2009 · In 1974 Tim Bachman left BTO, and in 1977 Randy Bachman left the band to resume the solo career he had begun in 1970. Turner and Thornton became co-lead guitarist in Bachman-Turner Overdrive, and the bassist and singer Jim Clench (once of April Wine) was added.
7 lis 2010 · One referring site was from a blogger in Montreal who knew Jim Clench. He had some interesting posts. Apparently Jim was thinking of getting a band going last year, to cover some of his songs with April Wine and BTO. They were doing rehearsals in West Island, a section of Montreal.
