First, the export of traditional Japanese fashion items such as kimonos and fans in line with Japonisme and second, the debut of the ‘big three’ Japanese designers (Issey Miyake, Yohji Yamamoto and Rei Kawakubo) in Paris around 1980.
By placing kimono in these historical contexts, this paper shows how kimono, especially for unmarried women, came to be represented as Japan's national dress. It also discusses the increasing popularity of kimono among young foreign tourists today in terms of global consumption of national heritage.
