After some troubleshooting, it seems that whatever height the head is at when I turn the printer on becomes "zero". I also found that the z-axis moves up/down freely until I auto-home the printer head. After I home it, the z-axis will not move down, even though the display will say it does.
3 sty 2022 · On Auto-Home (and also via moving menu) the Z-Axis does not move back down anymore without the Z-EndStop. With the EndStop switch plugged in it does move down. Steps to reproduce. Replaced the old original board with the new SKR mini E3 V3.0; Installed the BL Touch Smart v3.1; Removed the original Z-EndStop switch.
When your Ender 3 Z-axis is not moving, the most likely culprit is a faulty mainboard. Other reasons include too tight eccentric nuts or the Z limit switch that was accidentally closed. You should also check the cables and fix them if they are loose or damaged.
If not, you might want to loosen the two small bolts on the lead screw nut. These came over tightened from the factory on my ender 3 pro and really made the lead screw bind up when the gantry got close to the bed. Also, try slightly loosening the bolts that hold the z-stepper motor.
