[編集] 桜美林大学の起源は 1921年 、 清水安三 が 中華民国 北京市 朝陽門外に貧困地域の 中国人 女子を対象として設立した崇貞平民女子工読学校（後の 崇貞学園）である [ 1 ]。 後に清水は アメリカ合衆国 オハイオ州 の オーバリン大学 に学び、再び崇貞学園に帰任する。 しかし、学校は 第二次世界大戦 における 日本の降伏 を経て、 国共内戦 で勝利した 中国共産党 により接収され、清水は帰国を余儀なくされた。
