The J Nassau Street Local and Z Nassau Street Express [3] are two rapid transit services in the B Division of the New York City Subway. Their route emblems, or "bullets", are colored brown since they use the BMT Nassau Street Line in Lower Manhattan. [4]

The J train normally operates local, but during rush hours it is joined by the Z train in the peak direction. Both run local, express or skip-stop on different parts of their route.
J / Z skip-stop service runs towards Manhattan from about 7 AM to 8:15 AM and from Manhattan from about 4:30 PM to 5:45 PM. Fares – MetroCard® is accepted for all MTA New York City trains (including Staten Island Railway - SIR), and, local, Limited-Stop and +SelectBusService buses (at MetroCard fare collection machines).

When the Z operates, the two services form a skip-stop pair between Sutphin Boulevard–JFK and Myrtle Avenue-Broadway. In addition during rush hours and middays in the peak direction, they run express in Brooklyn between Myrtle Avenue-Broadway and Marcy Avenue, bypassing three stations.
The Z train is by far the most infrequent NYC subway line, and is a peak hour variation of the J train, allowing rush hour J and Z trains to alternate stops on the skip-stop portion of their lines between Marcy Avenue and Jamaica.
