Niʻihau (Hawaiian: [ˈniʔiˈhɐw]), anglicized as Niihau (/ ˈ n iː (i) h aʊ / NEE-(ee-)how), is the westernmost main and seventh largest inhabited island in Hawaii. It is 17.5 miles (28.2 km) southwest of Kauaʻi across the Kaulakahi Channel .

No comprehensive history of Ni'ihau has ever been written. This work is intended to fill that void. It synthesizes information from various sources and describes Ni'ihau from its bubbling volcanic emergence from the sea millions of years ago to its present-day problems as a struggling cattle and sheep ranch.
