In 1944, the IS-2 was the only large-scale Allied tank whose armor provided some protection from the well-known Tiger 88mm long-barreled guns and Panther 75mm L/70 guns. The IS-2 was succeeded by the IS-3, which was developed in late 1944 and left the factory shop in May 1945.

The machine gun armament of the IS-2 (1944) is vastly improved from the previous iteration due to the presence of a 12.7 mm DShK machine gun on a pintle-mount. This allows not only a better ability to defend against aircraft, but as an alternative offensive capability to the slow-firing 122 mm gun.
The IS-2 was designed with a party sloped frontal armor, 120 mm (4.72 in) thick and, moreover, a new massive 122 mm (4.8 in) main gun. The tank was introduced as soon as it’s main armament was ready, to counter the introduction of the German Panther and Tiger tanks.
The IS-2 tank hull was similar to the IS-1 tank, but the turret was modified to accommodate the larger 122 mm D-25T gun. The suspension was a torsion-bar suspension system and the tank was powered by a diesel V2-IC engine.
