You should either follow a guide to watch the show in chronological order (which includes the Clone Wars Movie), or watch the Movie before the show. It does act as an intro, and introduces several important characters. This post has more info about the "chronological order" thing.
The Clone Wars movie is pretty important. It introduces a major character for the show, so I’d say watch it. Edit: Also, I highly recommend you watch the series in release order. 99% of people suggest chronological, but I think it’s confusing for a first time viewer, and moves episodes in random places for no reason.
