15 lut 2023 · Lionel literature recommended benzene (flammable) for cleaning tracks up through 1948 when they started recommending carbon tetrachloride (non-flammable). From 1950 on Lionel recommended using their own maintenance kit cleaner or other household cleaners.

However - a word of warning: Do NOT smoke around it or expose it to any other kind of flame, spark, etc., as it is VERY flammable and also burns with an invisible flame.
The unit also includes two removable gray bottles with blue lettering -- which contain the solution for cleaning the track. Contrary to popular belief, this is not a self-motorized unit. It must be coupled to an engine and pulled around the track.
