2 dni temu · In 1920 the island was effectively partitioned with the creation of Northern Ireland, a six-county area with devolved powers within the United Kingdom, whereas under the Anglo-Irish Treaty of December 6, 1921, the other 26 counties became the Irish Free State, a self-governing dominion within the British Commonwealth and Empire.
In accordance with the treaty, on 6 December 1922 the entire island of Ireland became a self-governing Dominion called the Irish Free State (Saorstát Éireann). Under the Constitution of the Irish Free State, the Parliament of Northern Ireland had the option to leave the Irish Free State one month later and return to the United Kingdom.
Almost immediately, the northeast—Northern Ireland—withdrew and accepted self-governance within the United Kingdom. Dublin was set as the capital of the Irish Free State, and in 1937 a new constitution renamed the nation Éire, or Ireland.
