Barrett’s esophagus (BE) is a change in the distal esophageal mucosal lining, whereby metaplastic columnar epithelium replaces squamous epithelium of the esophagus. This change represents a pre-malignant mucosal transformation which has a known association with the development of esophageal adenocarcinoma.
The present study indicates that longstanding GER symptoms are linked to the presence of obvious tongues of metaplastic columnar epithelium in the distal esophagus, but the association with an irregular Z-line or CLE of at least 1 cm is not as obvious.
