By the 1850s the Irish had settled in large numbers across Ontario. They especially predominated in eastern Ontario and in farmland regions north and west of present-day Toronto. They also settled in large numbers on the Canada Company lands in the Huron Tract in western Ontario as well as in the newly opened territory to the north of it.
