Choose an IPSW for the iPod touch 4. Signed IPSW files can be restored via iTunes. Unsigned IPSWs cannot currently be restored via iTunes.
I want to restore my iPod touch 4 gen. using a previously downloaded .ipsw file from the web instead of iTunes trying to download it again. I have tried putting the .ipsw file in the ~/Library/iTunes/iPod Software Updates/ folder but it still downloads another one.
Navigate to your iPod touch 4 in Finder. Hold the Option or Alt key on your keyboard, and press "Restore". Select the iPod4,1_5.0.1_9A405_Restore.ipsw file that you downloaded. Wait for the restore to complete, and the iPod touch 4 to reboot.
Turn your iPod off. Hold down the home button while plugging in the cord to connect it to the computer. Keep holding it down until you see a cord on your iPod. iTunes will ask you to restore, do so. You're all set, but you're going to loose all your data.

(Alternatively, you can use this link to download directly). The firmware is downloaded from Apple's server and safe to use.
24 maj 2023 · To exit DFU Mode, simply force restart your device. For iPad, iPhone 6s and below, iPhone SE and iPod touch: hold the Home button and the Lock button until the device reboots. For iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus: hold down the Side button and Volume Down button until the device reboots.
Plug your iPod touch 4 in to your PC. Open a terminal, and navigate to the IPSW file that you downloaded, e.g. cd ~/Downloads. To perform a full erase restore, type idevicerestore -e iPod4,1_6.1.5_10B400_Restore.ipsw and press enter. Wait for the restore to complete, and the iPod touch 4 to reboot.
