I've done numerous tests with ipod classic gen 2, gen 3, gen 4, gen 5/5.5, gen 6, gen 6.5, gen 7, and the minis. I've also tested several nanos. Ipod Classic Gen 2-5.5 pretty much all sound fairly similar, with some subtle differences. Gen 3 sounds the worse of all of them and Gen 2/4 sound nearly the same as the 5/5.5/mini.
