For most people, the ipod 5/5.5 and the ipod mini are what people generally prefer. The reason for this is that their wolfson DACs have a warm sound signature which sounds better for most people because most people don't have good audio equipment.
I had the first touch screen nano and absolutely loved it. I don't remember how but it broke so I got the latest nano and that was great until it got run over, then I just had constant problems after that. Still miss it though.
