The TEC-9 was produced from 1985 until 1994, when the model and TEC-DC9 variants were banned nationally in the United States, among the 19 firearms banned by name in the now-expired 1994 Federal Assault Weapons Ban (AWB).
The TEC-9 became illegal as a result of the 1994 AWB, which resulted in the design being modified to the AB-9 (AB standing for "After Ban"). Interdynamic eventually closed its doors and Kel-Tec never attempted to revive the IP.

14 maj 2024 · Intratec responded by modifying the TEC-9 to comply with new regulations, renaming it the TEC-DC9. Even this version, however, faced bans and restrictions, demonstrating the weapon's tumultuous relationship with the law and its impact on American gun policy.
The Intratec TEC-9, also known as the KG-99, was a semi-automatic pistol chambered in 9x19mm Parabellum that was designed by Intratec, an American offshoot of Interdynamic AB. The TEC-9 was made of inexpensive molded polymers and a mixture of stamped and milled steel parts.
Intratec's last model of this series of firearm fully complied with all legislative restrictions, but it was still vilified primarily due to misinformation by the media and law enforcement, and Intratec's reputation took another hit.
