IMHO the most convenient way is to play ISOS out of external SSD. That way the PS3 reads from both internal HDD (game data) and external drive and you get the fastest loading times. When PS3 has to read both disc image and game data out of internal HDD, loading times are longer.

All pkg games, game data, DLC, PS1 and PS2 games go to the internal drive. After installation I use Managunz to download any updates and those go as well to the internal.

Until now I thought installing games completely to the internal HDD would likely increase performance like streaming textures or objects in open world games. As data can be loaded quicker from the HDD than from the game disk.
