Babies with jaundice are often treated with phototherapy lamps, which emit blue-green light that alters the bilirubin (yellow substance found naturally in the baby's blood) so that it can be more easily excreted. Sunlight emits light in a similar spectrum.

Women who had sunned their baby suspected with jaundice were found to be significantly more likely than other women to be in favor of this treatment (p = 0.00001).
Some new-born babies will suffer from jaundice and there are several Cochrane reviews of possible ways to prevent or treat it. These were added to in July 2021 with a new review of the effects of sunlight.
